July 2012 - Arthur Porter Restored - E9 CSL
This BMW CSL chassis #2211366 started life as a regular 1972 production CSL street car. Sold to its first owner in Nurnburg, Germany in 1972, #2211366 falls into a group of cars that were converted to race specification and raced throughout Europe in the 1970s. The first known competition appearance for 2211366 was in 1975 at Rheinisch Bergische, where the car was fitted with a rudimentary ‘bolt-in’ roll hoop.
#2211366 was eventually sold to a US serviceman based in Germany, who for several years used the car as a daily driver, before importing it to the USA in 1986.
During the following twenty years #2211366 passed through several more owners before falling into disuse and deteriorating to the point where it needed a full restoration. In 2009-2011 the car was entrusted to Arthur Porter and treated to a two year complete rotisserie restoration to full racing trim It made its reappearance in competition alongside four other CSL racecars at the 2011 Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca, California.
The livery chosen for the car is the distinctive dark blue (Atlantik Blau) BMW Motorsport color scheme of 1974. The car is still actively raced.
Most anybody with a CSL will have come into contact with Arthur at some point in time. His knowledge on these cars continues to be a great asset within the vintage BMW community.
